The golf creeps..

I happened to bump into Jean (ie Miss Cork 2008) in the hospital yesterday, and it seemed as if I arrived at the right time. They were talking about doing promotional shots for the Surgeon Noonan Golf Classic. The girls from my class are arranging a golf activity for the doctors in order to raise money for hospitals in Africa. I sat there in the hospital canteen with the girls brainstorming about ideas for a golf themed photo shoot. I got all excited about it and decided to help with the photo shoot styling.

Sifting through my closet with a bit of googling, I came up with a few outfit ideas for the shoot. I know that a lot of people would think my outfits are a bit ridiculous, but with me being an over the top person, I didn't want to prepare typical golf outfits. I consulted Fi, of course, and she was lovely enough to get involved in this shoot too. Bare in mind, that today is her birthday!

Happy Birthday Fi, Mwah xx

The Surgeon Noonan girls also brought some golf props including golf clubs, a retro white leather golf bag, and massive golf umbrellas. The photo shoot location was on the UCC campus in the main quad. It was hilarious seeing people lurking around, trying to figure out why the hell there are people dressed in golf outfits on campus.

After styling Jean, who looked class as usual. The fab photographer Miki Barlok suggested for someone else to be in the shots. The second person's character was to be Jean's slaved assistant. I went ahead with being that second person even though I didn't intend to. I felt like a midget standing next to the towering Jean, who happened to be in heels too! but I had a brilliant time.

I quickly changed into character with the help of Fi, and we got into action.

Here are a few shots from behind the scenes..

On Jean: ruffled shirt (The Legend- a boutique in Thailand), highwasted bubble shorts (H&M), bowtie (Vintage), yellow cardigan (Whistles), black knee high socks and visor (Pennys/Primark), yellow knee socks and yellow belt (H&M), blue flower clip on (Chapeau Claudette), shoes (Jean's own)

On LJ: checked blazer and head scarf (Vintage), brown top, velvet cigarette pants, and socks (H&M), shoes (Unisa), glasses (Commander Solamonder in DC)

"So there I was sitting in the library looking outside the window, when I saw this big group of people in the quad, some wearing golf clothes. And I thought to myself 'what the hell are those creeps doing?'.... I hear that you were one of the creeps!" - a text from my friend Odhran

Thank you to everyone who was involved in this shoot, and thanks for the box of chocolate Susan!

Look out for a photo in the Echo and Irish Examiner, and support Surgeon Noonan everyone!

The Yeohlee triangles..

I visited Malaysia last summer and met my wonderful Malaysian friends there who gave me the true Malaysian experience. It's a shame I didn't know about Yeohlee Teng last year, who's an amazing Malaysian designer who studied fashion design in Parsons School of Design, NY.

According to Vogue.co.uk Yeohlee Teng used up every piece of material he had for his A/W 09 collection, and he didn't leave any scraps left. The collection was mostly suited for minimalists, but even though I would consider myself an OTT person, I still enjoyed browsing through this collection. The fabrics used consisted of stiff black denim, knits, and silver lame. The only garment that broke out of the white/silver/black pattern is the piece with the red felted polka dots.

Photobucket

My favorite pieces would have to be the black tent dress with sheer triangle extensions, the draped lame dress with matching skullcap, and the last special outfit on the runway.

"After the final model had walked the runway, she stopped in front of the photographers to untie her four-layer sarong and, wearing a black turtleneck unitard, carefully laid the skirt flat on the floor so the audience could admire its – and Yeohlee's – technical wizardry, and applaud her unwavering commitment to environmentally responsible design." - Vogue.co.uk

Yeohlee believes that "clothes have magic.", and this can be truely appreciated in her latest collection.

Malaysian friends.. show me your hidden talents.

if only this were true..

My awesome FauxFiance over at Find Teh Choonz emailed us a super sweet picture the other day. It made me smile.

If only it were that simple.

I am still camera-less of late so I can't show you all the things I want to show you ... But I'm working on it. Things have been busy this week between Cork Fashion Week plans and Final Year Projects and Final Year Balls. But it's been good. What i need now though is a wee disco nap to help me get through this week... And I would love to party with SOS-er LJ soon, as we have not danced together in a while. I think we both deserve it.

Have a fantastich week! Peace, Fi xx

Le noneventful weekend..

I've done nothing exciting at all this weekend. Actually, I've been catching up on loads of TV shows such as Desperate Housewives, Lost, Ugly Betty, ANTM, and Project Runway Canada.

-Project Runway Canada: I still can't get over the fact that a so-called "designer" does not know who Yves Saint Laurent is. Do you believe that guy? What the fuck?!?!
Calm down LJ.. Serenity now.

-Ugly Betty: The more I watch Ugly Betty, the more I find her wearing more interesting items. Surely, maybe the combination of florals, lips, polka dots and stripes aren't ideal. But I could think of a way or two to work around it. Marc is deffo my favorite character! I think he is the most stylish one on the show, I'd love to steal all his beautiful colorful suits and tuxedos.

-ANTM: BLAH! The more this show goes along, the cheesier it gets. The girls this year aren't very interesting looking in my opinion. My favorite ones are Cecilia and Allison, and I am definitely hooting for one of them to win (even though Cecilia was very cheeky at the end of last episode)!

-Desperate housewives: Maybe my next hair change will be Brie's hair colour?

-Lost: Sawyer is my husband. Back off bitches.

The weather has been very confusing too. As sunny as it is outside, it is so damn cold and windy. In my grumpy morning state, the view from the window always deceives me. I wore this outfit yesterday on our last day of Dermatology, and I was the only bold one who didn't wear a white coat to clinics. I'm a H&M whore.

<span class=

<span class=

Yellow knitted cardi, highwasted grey harem pants, black pleated top (all H&M), red tights (Topshop), shoes (Sam Edelman), hat (Camden town), scarf (A market in Kuwait)

Also, would like to announce to you that the SOS! team are the official correspondents for Cork Fashion Week S/S 2009!

Hope you're having a more interesting weekend than mine.

I ♥ MW..

I have expressed my love for Matthew Williamson in the past in a number of posts. The latest hype about the amazing designer is his collection debut in H&M this April. I won't go into any details here, because there are people out there who have done the job already! There's always a big ordeal about designers contributing to highstreet shops. I don't always like these collections, but I really enjoyed Victor and Rolf, and CDG collections for H&M. Although recent disappointments included Alexander McQueen for Target. That's just my opinion though.

Anyway, the lovely Nitrolicious has given us a lovely peak at the Matthew Williamson collection for H&M. Actually, it's not just a peak, there's a lot of details in that article including photos, details on the fabrics used and the prices.

Personally, I really like the leather jacket and waistcoat, the jacquard jacket and skirt, and the studded belts..
But most of all I love love love the cobalt blue tuxedo. The tuxedo is a similar cut to the tuxedos seen in his S/S 09 collections. I covet it.

mw

I won't add any more of the photos here. I think you should deffo check out the link on Nitrolicious though!

Purple power..

Change is good..

I love the feeling I get when I get a new haircut, or an eye popping new hair colour. I don't really panic about haircuts anymore, if I don't like it, it'll grow out. Otherwise, I'll make it work...somehow. Although that plan didn't work out so well for me when I was 12 and decided to get an ear level bob. I was delighted to get my first short hair cut at the time, and with the hairdressers professional blow dry, I thought my hair would look lovely everyday. WRONG. I ended up pinning it all the time, as it was too short to even tie in a ponytail.

However, even though I'm pretty shite when it comes to styling my hair, I still love a new hair change every now and then. The last time I got my hair done was in January, when I decided that I wanted to grow my hair out, but color it "plum". I was quite disappointed with the resulting colour, even though the colour technician was amazing at what she does. I wanted an OOMPH vibrant plum, and it was...it was grand. Just not what I had in mind.

Anyway, I've been bored with my life and my hair recently. I've been reminiscing about my powerful red hair, and was eager to get another change. This time I didn't want to blow my money on an expensive treatment, so I opted for home dye from Tesco. I got Loreal Feria in Purple Power. My hair colourist today was of course my dear friend Fu, who has coloured my hair in the past with fabulous results.

The colour didn't come out very well on camera. The results are again, just alright. It wasn't the purple/plum oomph I was looking for. I didn't really get the 'feel good' sensation I usually get with my big hair changes.

But it's ok, change is good. I'm going to wait a little while longer until I do something completely new, for now I'm satisfied I think.

Mybrids..

My manager at work and I have an ongoing joke about Hybrid Costumes.. You know those costumes that are a mixture of half man/half woman? Like the bride and groom all-in-one-costume, frequently seen at the Inflatible Chapel at festivals. Or the Flamenco Lady Dancer and Bull Fighter Man. We have started to "plan" our own "company" of these Hybrid Costumes, entitled "Mybrid". I'm not so sure how successful we will be...
Anyway, while browsing the internet, I came across a rather fantastic Hybrid to rival one of our combinations (Boxer Man/Boxer's Girlfriend is one of our own inventions..) These are actually rather beautiful skirt/dress/coat outfits hybrids, made by a recent St-Martins Graduate Michael Van Der Ham . They featured in the Central St Martins A/W 09 ready-to-wear show. I really hope his designs are more successful than our faux ones. His are much better. And more beautiful. And wearible. And all round more fabulous.
These designs definitely proved him worthy to win the L'Oreal Professional Fashion Design Award in my opinion.

Have a nice week!

Sailor ink..

As I was dossing around college today, I spotted a pinup girl. It was one of those days where I wished I had my camera with me. She was tall, with a 1950's rockabilly black bob and rolled in fringe and lots of piercings. She was wearing a body con black dress that had a cutout back, and her back and arms were covered with eye popping colorful tattoos. I couldn't make out what the tattoos were, because I didn't want to stare!

I wish I could be that kind of girl for a day.. or maybe a week. I was in the States two summers ago, and was completely addicted to Miami ink. Kat Von D has the most amazing tattoos. I don't have any tattoos, but if I were to get one, it would definitely be a sailor pinup one. Perhaps a red heart with 'Mom' written across it. Or maybe it would be a naked pinup tattoo of Karl Lagerfeld.. Hmm..

As for me today, I was coincidentally wearing my ideal tattoo on my top.

1

Anchor top with ruffled sleeves (Pixie), red jumper worn underneath (H&M), black jersey bubble skirt (Topshop), pastel purple seamed tights (Emilio Cavallini), pastel pink cutout brogues (Jeffery Campbell), purple scarf (market in Kuwait), felt black headpiece (Spitalfield market), black bag (Miu Miu)

Like I said, I'd love to be that girl, but I know I never will be. I would love to be able to style my hair a la rockabilly for my everyday look, but I'm not very skilled when it comes to hairstyling. As for the tattoos, maybe I should draw all over myself and pretend I'm a tattoo girl for a day.

Do you have a tattoo? (What? How? When? Where?)

positively peachy

I had a lovely lazy Sunday, which consisted of LOTS of laundry, and a well over-due room tidy. I then took a stroll in the sun down town and engaged in a natter and a giggle over a social slice of pizza, pint and icecream with my two friends Aileen and Katie. We wandered into the city centre and I got to see my gorgeous friend Val at work in DV8 shoe shop. We talked college ball dresses and the likes. Then I indulged and had another icecream while sitting on my roof with my other friends Odhran and Dave. After all that I cleaned my kitchen and had tea and a natter with my lovely roommates Aine and Dee. All in all, it was a lovely friend-filled day.
Anywhoo... The other day, I came across this awesome shift dress.
It reminds me of Marc by Marc Jacobs S/S 09 collection or See by Chloe's last collection. The peachy colour is lovely and fresh, and very Luella too. The bow detail is very nice, but I'm quite weary of what i wear it with (ie leggings, not tights, less exposure!). I wore it out to a party on Friday night and think it is pretty rockin'. I feel like I'm channelling a very Whitney from The City look while wearing it.

It's time for me to hang out some clothes now..
Peace, Fi xx

Cork may not be Milan...

But it is on the way to it. Cork is one beautiful, fun, and vibrant city (to our readers from outside of Cork, I would recommend couch-surfing your way here, even for a weekend!)... And it has got a budding fashion scene, so we here at SOS headquarters are excited about the first ever Cork Fashion Week. We are hoping to be involved and attend some of the events and will let you know how we get on.

Milan, eat your heart out.

You say tomato, I say..

Pronouncing fashion designers names wrong, or avoiding saying them at all because you don't know how to pronounce their name? Not uncommon. I'm no designer but I've been called all sorts of things, especially in Ireland. Examples include: MaryLu, Lujuan, Lujan, Eugenie, Lujenne, Lushan, or just a plain old mumble. Yes, I've been mumbled before.

I was recently watching a video posted by chictopia on youtube about fashion designers pronunciation. It hilarious, watch it here. And I also stumbled upon this on ElleUK. I thought I'd share them with you, and I also picked out these ones at random!

Here you go..

Dries van Noten: dreese van know-ton
Les Chiffoniers: lay shif-on-ee-ay
Ann Demeulemeester: ann de-moo-le-mee-stir
Sinha Stanic: sin-er stan-ick
Maison Martin Margiela: may-zon mar-tan mar-jel-a
Jean Charles de Castelbajac: je-on sh-arl de cass-tell-bar-yak
Giuseppe Zanotti: ji-sep-ee za-not-ee
Osman Yousefzada: oz-man you-sef-zar-der
Comptoirs des Cottoniers: con-twar day cot-on-yay

Go to the Elle Link for an extensive list! It's interesting going through them all, cause you probably will find some names you've mispronounced in the past.

I missed the sun..

I still can't believe it's March. It's crazy how the year has flown by so fast. I was devastated this morning about being stuck at the hospital when it's so lovely and sunny outside. It's officially spring. And it's a sunny dry day in Cork, and I was indoors all day. All I can say to that is ........ Humph.

I've done lots of vintage shopping in London the past 2 weekends. My favorite shops were Rokit and Beyond Retro. But other shops in Bricklane and Camden were pretty amazing too. I was never a big fan of rummaging, but I find searching through vintage unique pieces very exciting. I've purchased many vintage items including dresses, knitwear, headpieces, bow ties, a jumpsuit, and a petticoat skirt (I've always wanted one..). I won't share everything with you right this moment, but I'm certain that you'll be seeing them floating around SOS! at some point.

I left the apartment today hidden under a massive knitted Zara wrap cardi and a woolly scarf, not realising how beautiful it was outside. I never have my sunglasses with me, but they would have been very handy today. Underneath the polar bear covering, I was wearing my new vintage grey knitted dress from Beyond Retro. It's so '80s. It's mid calf length, with subtle shoulder pads and a straight neckline. I love the braided knit detail along the shoulders and neckline, and it's cinching skinny belt. I paired the dress with Topshop indigo blue tights, and my new comfy transparent yellow Melissa shoes.

I hope tomorrow will be another lovely spring day. I'd love to leave the house without a gazillion layers for once this year. I'd also love to go get some icecream, and sit outside in the sun.

Nom nom nom.

A kick in the..

Imagine yourself on a fun night out. Then think of these people you will encounter..
1- The girl who gives you her thoughts on your makeup, without you asking for an opinion.
2- The person shoves you as they walk past.
3- The annoying guy who just won't go away.
4- The group of friends (usually all girls) who can't stop staring and whispering.
5- The person who spills their drink on you.

Now, wouldn't it be great if you had a secret weapon you could discretely use?

Ladies and gents....
Behold.. The pony shoes.

All of these shoes and boots are made out of real leather and a wood wedge. The soles are decorated with aluminum horse irons, which make perfect gadgets. They can be detached, but why would you detach them? They are fitted perfectly and make these shoes oh-so-special. I could imagine myself galloping in these in town, and then if I see someone I don't like.... they'll get a kick in the phlange (as Fi would put it).

I absolutely love the thigh high patent pair of boots. They remind me of the Berardi boots Victoria Beckham wore (which aldo made me die a little bit inside).

Sweet shoe dreams.

Paddy spirit is lacking..

I've been looking forward for a day off for so long. It's sad because I hadn't even realised that it was near Paddy's day til yesterday. I apologize for the lack of posting, but in the spirit of paddy, I thought I'd share my Paddy day events.

I've only been to the Cork parade once..shame on me. It's funny because it's usually only the tourists and kids here that would cover themselves up in shamrocks and green glitter. In Cork (or Ireland for that matter), today is an excuse to get drunk in the morning without it being socially unacceptable.

I was in the States last year visiting friends at this time. I was in Boston 2 days before Paddy's day and my eyes were blinded with green. On the T (tube), the driver wished everyone a Happy St. Patrick's Day at every stop! And that was 2 day before!! I was in Phoenix on the 17th, and not much was happening there. I drew a shamrock on my face.. very creative, I know.

This year tops all of those. I slept in, watched 90210 (hate to admit it..but I love it), then trotted my ass to the library. I did loads of printing and some study, and wore nothing green. I did however distribute care bear jellies in the spirit of Paddy. I also wished Happy St Patrick's day (in Gaeilge) to an old man, who I of course scared, and to another randomer. Kate wore green and put us all to shame, and Fi ate some green spinach (that counts, right?). I didn't even have any potatoes for dinner. I had chicken madras......shame on me.

The shameful SOS!ers

Bless the green leaves...

..and bless Kate for wearing green.

Dress (Beyond Retro), tights (Topshop), shoes (Melissa), belt (H&M)

..and now I'll go back to watching 90210, then the new episode of Gossip Girl. It's finally fucking back.

Fascination

While LJ leads her jet-setting lifestyle, I have had a weekend of parties and study. It's not really the best combination.. I am now all partied out too and have yet to study.
Friday night was my dear friend's Odhran and Katie's 21st Extravaganza. The themes were as follows:Squares, circles, rectangles and triangles. Neon. Spookiness. I went for a combination of all three.. and I made my very own fascinator combing neon squares, circles and triangles with a spooky half mask effect. I was quite proud of myself. Plus I was chief make-up/facepaint artist and got to do neon artwork all over everyon'e face. I wore my awesome Topshop jumpsuit and Dans le Sac vs Scroobius pip cassestte necklace with my DIY fantastich-fascinator.
Also.. Happy birthday Odhran and Katie! SOS loves you. Peace, fi xx

They just had to be saved..

I apologize for the irregular posting. I was in London last weekend, and college work is finally catching up with me.

London was amazing, as usual. I love the cold industrial polluted breeze blowing through the tiny space between the airplane and the connecting corridor thing (what's it called?!). I had a nice family weekend filled with joyous conversations, delicious food, and plenty of shopping. I wasn't too pushed about going to all my favorite shops because I'll be heading back there next weekend!

I shopped in Topshop & H&M on Oxford street, Carnaby street, Brick lane, and Camden town. Not so bad for a weekend! I'll have more time next weekend to go to all the other places I wanted to visit. What made it better was that I was shopping with my mom! That's always fun. I bought a few things here and there. I got some tops and tights from Topshop, some vintage items from Camden and Brick lane, and 5 pairs of shoes. Yes...five....all on Sunday.

I went to the Irregular choice boutique on Carnaby street with some friends, then took my family there on Sunday. I must be cursed with a toxic admiration of shoes. My first pairs of Irregular Choice were my metallic blue glass heeled swan shoes bought back in 2004.

I tried more than 10 pairs in the boutique, and I have a feeling I wrecked the sales assistant's head a little. The shop was so beautiful..so me! It was colorful and vibrant, with polka dots, florals, neon, glitter and everything else you can think of sprinkled on the shoes. I love the fact that they make everything pretty.. from the shop itself, to the shoes, to the shoeboxes, and even their bags. In the end, I settled on 4 pairs. I got 2 pairs of flats, 1 pair of sandal boots, and a pair of heels. They even gave me free cupcake luggage tags and bunny/unicorn stickers! My love for Irregular Choice just keeps growing and growing...

Irregular Choice floral/red velvet shoes.. I love the triangle shaped heels.

Irregular Choice embroided sandal boots.

Irregular Choice gold woven flats with bubble gum pink ribbon and pastel yellow bow.

The Blythe for Irregular Choice red/white polka dots shoes with white ruffle trims.

I bought the fifth pair from the shop Sniff. They are oh-so-comfy pairs of turquoise plastic pairs with 3 buckle straps from Vivienne Westwood for Melissa.

Jen and I have been gawking at this collection for ages. I was hoping I'd see the plastic sandals with the heart in the front, but maybe next weekend?

My excuse.... The shoes had to be saved.

Happy shoe dreams.

It runs in the family..

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Agy Deyn. There are two corners of opinion which swing the pendulum, one from SOS-er Lujain who loves her, the other from my dear friend Leonora who hates her. I am torn. And then I discovered there was another one... Emily Deyn. And she made a rather cool tshirt with her friend and co-artist Hussain. Hussaindeyn are artists, DJs, models, designers and more. I don't know if I like her either. I do like their "Long may she reign" tee though.

Agy was spotted wearing it at Anna Sui FW 09 show at NY fashion week. So I presume Toppers will be peddling out their interpretation of this "It"-tee. And I want in.

Have a greeat week! Peace, Fi xx

Fayoona's Almost A-Z of S/S '09

Picture the scene... a poor student browsing ASOS, Net-a-porter, Topshop and window shopping in Brown Thomas... Same poor student worrying that she won't be able to demonstrate the current trends in her own special way due to financial limitations... This money-challenged fashionista/student was feeling very sorry for herself, along with a need to satisfay a rather bad shopping habit.
However, I was browsing through a March issue of Company magazine at home the other day and it included an A-Z of Spring Summer trends... Typically this cues me to feel sorry for myself and to moan to my friends how I want to go shopping but have to save money due to this stupid credit crunch. As i looked through their alphabet of trends, I noticed that sub-consciously I had stocked up on a lot of key elements. I was back in the style stakes without even knowing it.
Voila, my Almost A-Z of S/S '09 trends collages.

I don't feel so bad now. I better start soaking up A/W trends though so I don't end up in another predicament.

Have a lovely weekend, Peace! Fi xx

Le shoe sacrifice..

Just got home from a quick dinner with Fi and "Meds got talent". It was a brilliant night..very entertaining. Never knew there were so many talented peeps on med..

My feet are sore.. I wore the YSL tribute 2 boots for the second time. They are not suitable for walking on cobble stone.. or for standing for long hours. But hey, the look good on, and they're the highest heels I have measuring 15 cm (6 inches). I hate the fact that the cobalt blue soles are ruined after only 2 wears. Grr..

I need a good foot rub, or a hot foot soak.. mmmm..

Tonight I wore a black Zara ruched dress, my new Alexander McQueen black jacket, Topshop red tights & clutch, and the YSL boots. I'm still cameraless, so I am unable to share my outfit with all of ye..but I am awaiting my new camera from my mom. YAY!! I took some photos on my shitty webcam, I suppose they'll do the job for now.

My YSL tribute boots with the heels forming a beautiful mostache.

My multicolored studded Topshop clutch.

I still haven't packed for London.. not that there's lots to pack. But I'm taking my biggest suitcase with me, because I have a spending session in mind. I hate packing, and what's worse is unpacking..but I won't worry about that now.

Hmm... what to pack.. what to pack..

Notice the tag "Heavy".. how typical of me..

My true love..

I've been milking the lecture series this week, and have been sleeping in almost everyday....I'm very bold. Anyone who knows me well will tell you that I am NOT a morning person. I will take any chance I have to sleep in, and my judgement (or lack of..) is very disturbed in the morning time. The mug (in the photo above) was given to me by my dear Fu, and is correctly applied to moi.

I found these cute cup sleeves on Etsy (where else?), and they are made out of hand-embroidered double layer of wool felt. Sounds tempting to own in this cold awful weather. 60bugs makes these for 15$, which isn't bad, because after all...it's always time for a cuppa.

I love the hearts with the black lining.. they look like potential hard core sailor tattoos. I wouldn't mind tattooing I (heart) Tea on my arse.

Just a thought.
