I have been looking forward to the David Shrigley "Brain Activity" exhibition in the Southbank for ages. My brother and I always end up getting each other his cards; we both appreciate the sinister/slightly awkward humour he creates. I read some comments online how his work isn't "art" and it isn't necessarily worthy of a show. Whatever. He makes witty comments on life by drawing relatively simple pictures/sticking a barbie in a pumpkin, a talent not many people can say they have.

I have a habit of following in love with old couples, the ones that are still madly in love, walking around hand in hand. I spotted a couple, that wouldn't look out of place on Advanced Style, around Old Street the other day. The woman had a died red pixie crop and her grey-haired partner had his septum pierced. She was wearing those patent Doc Martens with a heel. I like to think that they were each other's first and forever. (Wishful thinking eh? WHY HEIDI AND SEAL WHY!)
Dr Martens new Spring Summer campaign is all about your first love. Tweet them (@DrMartens) using #firstandforever telling them all about it. It takes a hopeless romantic like yours truly to think your first love should have the longevity of a pair of Dr Martens.

Camp

I have been to camp. It did not look like a Wes Anderson sepia-hued scene. It was more like awkward Irish prepubescents keeping "sketch" while couples fumbled around "looking for their tennis ball". This is no lie.

The trailer for Wes Anderson's new film "Moonrise Kingdom" confirms my love of peter pan collars, sheer sleeves, and Bill Murray. If he could direct my life, that would be wonderful.

The best thing about the cold weather is wearing layers. I kept a pair of hotpants on underneath my skirt over the weekend. I could take off my skirt and have a whole new look/my derrière had an extra layer. It makes all night parties better as at least you aren't going home in the same clothes as the night before.

22 artists and some kids drew some special animals for an exhibition curated by our talented mate Jason Kerley called Raarr. It starts this Thursday in The Book Club, a favourite venue of ours. They have art, music and booze, not much else needed on a cold January evening.

All profits go to the NSPCC. Isn't it all very nice.

This Wild Flag video makes me want to always wear a plastic mask and a dress. This is one of my favourite outfits ever (it happened last year, just like this video). (I am so not fashion forward anymore).
Part girl/part animal is seriously hot. Those old Greek stories are onto something.

Peculiar Strength

I was sent an a-may-zing horse pendant from the lovely folks at Rokit Designers Guild a few weeks back but real life/vacations got in the way of the internet. I think the internet survived without me, but I'm sure y'all missed my face.
My handmade horse is from Peculiar Vintage, who is a girl who bases her designs on vintage findings. I adore found items and this is a great way of incorporating it into jewellery design. My horse means Strength, which is something I need at the moment.

It totally matches my tan, yeah?

Thank you kind Rokit and kind Peculiar Vintage. If you want to find someone a special and unique charm, I definitely check these out. It is something that you won't find in every high street shop and are made to last. My other personal favourite is the Honey Bee charm. I would wear it with a Beyonce-inspired outfit, obviously.

Hot Damn, Summer in the city: Part 9

This is a special "Hot Damn" as it something that I hold very dear to me. My friends and I are part of a music friendship project called The Note Well. We organise fun things that want you to make friends and talk about music. One of the events we run is called "Speed Listening" (I've told you about it already). If you are looking for something different to do in London, this event couldn't come with any higher recommendation as it is something I do a lot.
The next one is on July 10th in Carnivale in Whitechapel (facebook event here) and for the first time ever, I can't be there. So instead of speed listening with real people on July 10th, I'm going to have a faux speed listen via the internet.
Picture the scene. We both bought our tickets online. I introduce myself, maybe explain The Note Well to you a bit more, we plug our earphones into each other music players and we spend approximately twelve minutes sharing songs. Here is what I would play to you.

Cults- Abducted. I have a crush on this girl's hair. I have a crush on this girl. The band are also great live. This is my on-repeat song at the moment.

Jens Lekman- Your arms around me. It is the song from that scene in Whip It, you know the one. The sexy pool one.

Cold Pumas- Jela. I saw Cold Pumas a few weeks ago at Dance Magic. I very much enjoyed them. (This is when I show you I don't listen to exclusively bands with girls I have crushes on or music from sexy film scenes)

Twin Sister- Bad Street. I probably have a crush on these girls as well. I just need to see them live or dance or something for the crush on them to start. Good for dancing.

Virgin Forest- South Beach. These boys are my friends. They make good music. I have cool friends.

Grass Widow- 11 of Diamonds. More girls with guitars. You can't go wrong.

Then, people around us take out their earphones, you are told to move onto the next seat to speed listen with a new friend. Don't worry though, I find you on facebook the next day and "like" your status.
So, July 10th, come to East London for Summer Speed Listening by Note Well. You can still get some early bird tickets from here. If you do go, tell them you are replacement Fi, Team Note Well may leave you in charge of the glitter and may give you an extra piece of cake.

Bueller can't stop the rain

Last Thursday was spent at the Queen of Hoxton at their Rooftop Film Club. Just like Ferris Bueller, we didn't let a thunder storm stop our fun. My friend and I braved the outdoor rooftop cinema, sheltering from the torrential rain with an umbrella. It wasn't so bad, especially as we got some extra freshly made popcorn (the best popcorn I have had at a film in ages, no joke). I left a small bit damp but young Matthew Broderick is so dreamy it didn't matter.

This is definitely a fun way to spend an evening, just bring an umbrella. The Rooftop Film Club has listed new films on their program too! I'm thinking The Big Lebowski next. Thank you Freya.

Hot damn, Summer in the city part 8

Do you like to eat? I do! Here is a Summer in the City London food special! Yum.

June 18th and 19th and weekends afterwards... Red Market is going to be more than a food market tucked away behind Old street. It will be open late nights at the weekend and will have an urban beach. Find me here after the disco drinking a cocktail and playing petanque.

June 19th... Barter for lunch at Hummus Bros in Soho for Cancer Society charity. The idea is that you bring a few useful items (like clothes, books, household items) which a Cancer Society charity shop expert will value and then you can use that to redeem on Hummus. Nice way of clearing out unwanted clutter, doing a good deed and eating Hummus Bros.

June 23rd to 26th...Head to Luna and Curious, one of the best independent boutiques in London and go to their Rock Lobsta crustacean delights East London take-away eatery. They have East London themed rolls.

Sometime in July... Register to attend Jacques Pop-Up Townhouse, which will have Jacques cider and pretty things in a secret London location. I am particularly excited about this as Frankie Murray, vintage stylist extraordinaire, will be there styling people.

July 29th to 31st... Cakey Perry is a secret pop-up high tea experience. It was inspired by the Katy Perry video "California Gurls". I am extremely excited about this, as it is being organised by Cakehead Loves Evil, extremely exciting cake people. Read more on Don't Panic.

All summer long... Guerilla Bake Sale is your friendly rogue bake sale from The Note Well. Cake strikes when you least expect it. It will definitely strike on July 10th though.

Hot Damn, Summer in the city: Part 7

June is doing that stupid weather thing... Whatevs. We can find fun cool stuff to do.

June 15th- July 2nd... Harry Smiles Vintage fun pop-up in Exmouth Market. I stumbled across this yesterday. They have embroidered denim shirts and brooches that look likely bloody daggers which is alright by me. On Thursday 16th of June, they are even having a vintage styling evening.

June 18th... Bandstand busking is having a bandstand at Ray Davies Meltdown Festival in Southbank. I saw Vivian Girls at Bandstand busking before, these guys are on to a good thing. It runs from 1pm to 5pm and Southbank is always wonderful on a Saturday.

June 19th... For Books Sake are having a Books and Blues afternoon, it sounds pretty wonderful. FBS is all about women who write, reviews written by women, generally a nice place to be a woman.

June 19th (again)... The Little Theatre of Dolls is a puppet show as part of The Hendrick's Lecture Series. It will be held in The Last Tuesday Society on Mare Street. It looks wonderful.

June 24th to July 24th... Folly for a Flyover is a five-week temporary space with cinema, performance and a cafe. It will be located in Hackney Wick, with the space being treated like a building hidden underneath a flyover (!). This sounds like a hit, check out their event listings. I am excited!

More to come. I love Summer.

Free Range

If you have been checking out our Summer in the City series, you will have read about something called Free Range, an exhibition held in the Truman Brewery, off Brick Lane. The basics of it is that different Universities show off their free range talent. All organic. The way I like my eggs.
Last week, I went to Free Range to see Middlesex University exhibition. You can read more about the Middlesex University degree show on their site.
There was a lot of talent. How I wish I went to art school. Check out some of my favourites from the exhibition. Picture heavy....

Collars, sparkly things, antiques hiding jewellery, transformer-esque pieces, conversations with sisters, records, neon... All the work here is by Middlesex University new Graduates

Every week there is a new University in Free Range, it is a great way to pass an hour or three. Definitely something to check out over the summer.

Lazy Oaf x Fred Butler

Lazy Oaf is a super fun label I have liked for a while. They enjoy burger phones, just like me. Fred Butler is a designer I go girl-fan around. Put them together, it is pretty much a magical combination. I checked out the launch for Fred's capsule collection for Lazy Oaf last week. It was wonderful. The pieces are totally affordable and look great.

Laura Lees Teaches

I have a dress from Laura Lees by Topshop collaboration for quite some time. Since secondary school even, long before designer/high street collaborations were a hyped thing. Laura's cheeky embroidery makes me want to get her patterns as tattoos. I was always on the look out for more of her dresses in the teeny tiny concession in Roches Stores in Cork. I have two, it never really made it to Cork.
Then they stopped, no more cheeky stitched swallow birds on floral print tea dresses. I kept wearing my dress. People kept complimenting me on my dresses but I never knew what happened to the label. This was all before accessible internet and my ability to navigate google. I always remembered the name Laura Lees though.

Skip ahead a few years and through a random, fluke encounter, I met Laura Lees. She is rather cool. She mentioned that she would be hosting some embroidery workshops over the summer. You can read more about them here!
They start on July 30/31 and are £90 for a two day workshop and will continue one weekend a month. It would be a great place to learn a new skill from such a talented artist. If you want to get more information/book a place drop an email to them.

Hot Damn, Summer in the city: Part 6

Micachu is one talented artist. She was one of my ATP festival highlights and has been involved in curating a festival of her own in East London.
Spitalfields Festival runs from June 10th-25th, with special events organised by Micachu on the 12th, 14th and 23rd. If you have any sense, next Sunday June 12th you would head to Spitalfields market where Micachu has curated a 70s themed market selling all things 70's from books to clothes to records. There will be a lot of people DJing (all in one breath now): Kwes, Cakes, Kwake bass, Micachu, Amish rules aply, Edmund finnis, Mathew herbert plus The Pukes and Cries of London live.

Shopping plus music. This is good.

I asked Micachu what her favourite thing to do in London over the summer is (apart from her festival, obviously). "I'd always say notting hill carnival. Its free and good and a tradition."

Brighton Rocks

I had the pleasure of getting to go to Brighton this weekend to check out Brighton Fashion Week. I found some great new talent at their Ready to Wear show and a new vintage store to obsess over. More on them once my sunburn is gone.

How to nail it: Spring florals

1- Apply 1 layer of a base coat. I used All in one basecoat, topcoat, & nail hardener by Barry M
2- Apply two layers of a light shade. I chose a light rose pink shade 278 Marshmallow pink by Barry M.
3- Take a bobby pink (hair grip), split it open, and use the round head as a dotting device. Pick the colors that you like to make the flowers, pop the hair grip's head in the color and put 4-5 dots in a circle to create a flower.
4- I went for bright shades and metallics to create the flowers: Shade 279 bright pink by Barry M, shade 300 Acid yellow by Barry M, Shade 296 (the coral colour) by Barry M, shade 280 Cherry Berry by Revlon, shade 925 Gold Coin by Revlon.
5- Put a little dot in some of the flowers, or in the spaces between the flowers. I used Richelle by Zoya.
6- Finish it off with a glittery top coat. I used shade 264 Pink Iridescent by Barry M.

OMG, June is almost here already. If I was you, I would bang out your fresh summer wardrobe and go to some of these things...

June 1st.. Bird on the wire (one of my favourite gig promoters) have got FM Belfast playing a gig. Icelandic pop in Cargo.
June 1st (again)... Manon from the Royal Ballet live.. If hip Icelandic music doesn't do it for you, go down to Trafalgar Square and watch the Royal Ballet on a big screen. It is one of the loveliest ways to pass an evening in London.

June 2nd to July 25th... Fashion at Free Range... Free Range showcases new design talent; fashion, art, photography and more. It is free in and each week has a new theme. If fashion floats your boat, head to the Old Truman Brewary on Brick Lane for the first week of the show. There is always a lot to see at this, definitely recommended.

June 2nd.. Queen of Hoxton Rooftop Film Club starts. You can watch films. On a roof. With booze. Perfection. This is going to be happening all summer, so check their site for dates and times of films.
June 2nd... Central Saint Martins Second Year Illustration students have their end of year showcase, 57 Protaganists, in SW1. Our friend Jazz is in it. Her talent alone makes me want to go.

June 3rd... The Note Well is having a party. Come! We always have fun.

June 4th... Dance Magic Dance is having a party with FairOhs, to celebrate FairOhs album launch (facebook event here). I love these two music groups, so together, it is a match made in aural heaven. Plus, it is free! See you in The Victory?

June 5th... The Laden Showroom is having a sample sale. Shhhhh.

June 7th... Style and Substance: All Female Talent Show in the Queen of Hoxton. This talent show is for girls and the money goes to charity. Good causes and allows to for patting girls on the backs.

June 9th... Celebrating the future of women in East London is a talk being held in Richmix, It sounds like it could be a really interesting evening. If you aren't interested, go to the cinema in Richmix. Also good.

June 11th... Clapton Festival.. This is my part of town, I am excited about this.

June 14th... Puma Social Club in the Queen of Hoxton. Free entry, free drinks, free food, some amazing bands and games. You need to sign up here to come along.

June 18th... Saturday Homemade Market in St John'[s Hackney. Another local market to get excited about.

June 20th... Laughter Master Class in The Book Club. This is no joke. You do have a laugh.

June 24th... Jaguar Shoes and Dreambags starts a new installation inhouse. One of my favourite venues in East London, the interior changes every few months, each designed by different artists or collectives. This time round, an Italian artist duo, Carnovosky, have got a jungle theme for their installation. There may be foliage. This will be good.

Hot Damn, Summer in the city: Part 3

May is almost over. And more stuff keeps happening. London how you spoil us so.

May 24th-26th... Clerkenwell Design Week has got some great events happening, a lot for free. It also has got lots of free live music. Always a treat!

May 20th-June 26th... The Amwell Street Knocking shop is an amazing sounding pop-up, which will be selling archive and vintage fashion, showing films, having workshops, the list goes on. You can find it on 63 Amwell Street.

June 12th-18th... Two Degrees festival is a festival which mixes art with activism. This can only lead to great things. More on this to come.

ID: Fred Butler and Katie Eary Workshop

As part of the Diesel Island School of Life, they have organised some workshops in association with some talented folks (they were part of my summer to do list). I went to the ID Customisation class with Fred Butler and Katie Eary, which was one of the events in the series. I, basically, have a girlfancrush on both Fred and Katie, so having a chance to get crafty with them was pretty special.
I took part in the Island Headress workshop, hosted by Fred. She showed us a whole load of techniques for making paper things to gluegun on to other things while attaching more paper things and then you put a feather on top. It was all very much her style. I have a lot more respect for her work, considering how patient you need to be for the simplest of paper folding tasks.

Thank you Fred Butler, Katie Eary, ID Magazine, Red Gallery and Diesel for the event. Thanks Alex for having me along with you.

Definitely worth it, even after all my gluegun incidents.

Sheer New Look

New Look asked a few bloggers to get together at their press day and, literally, play dress up with their A/W 2011 products. Not only did this allow for extra poking at the clothes, it also meant we got to meet Jackie Dixon, of Show Me Your Wardrobe, who took our mug shuts. She is an absolute dream and it was so lovely spending a few moments with her.

You can see more of the pictures here on the New Look site. We all look so happy.

Next season, I am happy to say that the sheer pleated skirt trend is carrying on. I loved this skirt's swallow bird print (reminded me of rockabilly tattoos). There is no skirting about the issue that this skirt is sheer. If the underskirt were any bit shorter, I don't think the look would have worked. However, it is perfect, I can't wait to get my winter mitts on this.

It was really great allowing of New Look letting us style some looks for next season. Don't think you can't show New Look how stylish you are. You can take part in their new tv show "Style the Nation", which is going to be on T4. The prize is to become a New Look stylist. You can win a job. Nice. You can apply to enter right here!

All Tomorrow's Parties

All Tomorrow's Parties is one of the coolest festivals around. There is no other word to describe it. Instead of having the usual host of touring buzz bands/jaded bands that rule the radio, ATP is curated by artists themselves. The festival dynamics and types of music at each event change with each festival curator. It happens in Butlins, Minehead, so there is also the added luxury of having a roof over your head.
At the very last minute, I got a chance to go (thank you friend) to the Animal Collective ATP. Animal Collective are interesting guys, creating quite experimental pieces, so it was great seeing what bands and performers they would like to have play together. Quite a few of the performers were experimental boys who made lots of great noise, which I really like, but my main love of for bands with girls and a chorus. My three musical/style highlights were from bands with a fair amount of oestrogen.
Beach House were wonderful. Victoria from BH wore a silver suit. My mind was blown.

Prince Rama are two sisters from Florida who grew up on a Hare Krishna farm. You can definitely get some chanting influences in their songs; I could listen for hours. The girls wore glitter on their faces and had sparkling dresses. We are kindred spirits in glitter.

Tickley Feather was one of my favourite performers. On stage, Tickley seemed quite bashful and occasionally giggled to herself, smiling at an unknown secret. Her songs were fuzzy and poppy, I will never grow tired of of that kind of song.

Other pleasant musical experiences were provided by Micachu and The Shapes, Animal Collective (the second day they played), Terry Riley and Gang Gang Dance.
I'm hooked, ATP, I want to come back for more glitter and girl bands.

Hot Damn, Summer in the city: Part 2

There is plenty of stuff going down all summer in London, so if you miss any of the other stuff, you can be rest assured that you can do this most days. These bits are here for the whole of the summer. Less time constraints, more time for fun.

Festival of Britain at Southbank... Every weekend, there is a different theme down at the Southbank with lots of fun, free events. If you don't want to go to a vocal workshop or write a poem, you can hang out in their new roof garden. Or sit on their beach. Or jump in the fountain. Endless fun.

The Bunker at 123 Bethnal Green... I already love this store and now there is a downstairs cafe. Word to the wiser though: don't get any Lilli Vanilli cake onto any of the Noki dresses.

Cockroach tour of the Science Museum.. Is it wrong that I like the idea of scuttling around a museum dressed up a as a bug? Booking and sense of humour essential.

Netil Market.. This market in London Fields was started by one our favourite labels, Bitching and Junkfood. The market itself has lots of local talent. Great way to spend a Saturday, by starting here, getting a vintage playsuit then hit the corner shop for a beer and sit in the park all day.

Covent Garden Icecreamists.. These guys are fighting Lady Gaga. I don't want a small company to go bust, especially ice-cream pioneers, but just in case, get some exciting ice-cream from them over the summer, in case the dream melts.

Urban Curve Garden in Dalston... This is a really lovely space hidden near Dalston Junction overground station. They run workshops and the place has a really relaxed vibe. Bring your own picnic and make friends with locals.

Dalston Roof Garden... This is a new space, where they want people to get involved in setting up their roof garden. I will definitely try and check it out.

Dirt at the Wellcome Collection... Dirt is a part of every day life. Learn some more about it.

Hot Damn, Summer in the city: Part 1

London in the summer, I can taste the fun, ice-cream, beer in the park. Here are some of the things I think you could do during May....

May 10th.. Diesel School of Island Life x Red Gallery (an East London gallery) has got an Island Dancing with Totally Extinct Dinosaurs workshop. More info on Diesel's facebook here and you need to collect a passport from a Diesel Store, but it gives you access to a whole load of crazy/cool events happening. I can't decide which ones I want to go to, as I like them all (mask making, guerilla gardening and customising workshops are close favourites though). Go figure.

May 12th.. Laduree opens up it's first tea salon store in Covent Garden. Make like a tourist and get a pistachio macaroon, savour it in the Covent Garden Piazza and watch some buskers.

May 12th (again)... The Book Club launches it's new exhibition from Keeler and Tonero. Art and booze, always good. You can see Ghostjumps and Wormholes in TBC from May 12th until June.

May 12th (and another one).. The Orange Dot Gallery in Bloomsbury has got a new collection, from Tony Wright, called Incidents and Reflections. Wright worked on storyboards for films, so there should be some visual appeasing drawings. It runs until May 28th.

May 15th... Chatsworth Market... This is really lovely local market trying to bring their community together. It is on every fortnight and probably has organic vegetables.

May 19th.. Stag and Dagger Festival... This festival is a good one, the tickets are cheap, the venues are sweaty, the bands are good. It is held in a variety of venues around Shoreditch and results in a lot of drunk hipsters raving until the wee hours.

May 19th (again)... Joe Bloggers in Dingwalls, Camden... This night sounds great, it has been curated by bloggers. I always love when things are curated by people, it feels like there was a greater thought process involved in the planning. I curate my dinner sometimes. May 20th... The Nomad Cinema is going to be in York Hall, Bethnal Green, showing Fight Club. Sweaty Brad Pitt in East London, yes please.

May 21st.. New Gallery Jumble sale in the New Gallery, Camberwell. These guys are trying to be 100% eco-friendly and have an emphasis on hand crafted goods. An excuse for me to go South of the river I think. The

May 25th-29th.. Shakespeare Happens at More London. Free open air theatre down by the river. You can mourn you own tragic middle class life by watching The Tragedy of Macbeth and then remember you shouldn't be so mournful after all.

Neurotic-YEAH!

How great is Neurotica? We talked about them two years ago. Just in case, I'll give you a quick recap: they are a wonderful local label which makes killer prints (including a Courtney Love print as part of a collaboration with Rachel Friere). Last weekend, I checked out their sample sale in Netil Market, near to London Fields. Not only did I get to say hello to the brains behind the operation, I also picked up some pieces, which I can't wait to wear.

Royal Wedding tea party

First of all, congratulations to William & Kate, as they are obviously reading this post.

Second of all, I loved her wedding gown. It was so elegant, so classic. One you'd look at in 40 years and still think it's beautiful. Well done Sarah Burton!

In celebration of the beautiful royal wedding, my friend Noor hosted a lovely royal wedding watching tea party in her humble home. We were really excited about it, seeing as this is a day that will be recorded in history. Also, we are in Kuwait.. No royal wedding day off, no street parties, no in shop/cafe events. We collaborated on some corny party activities, and invited a few friends over.

Corny royal events:

1- Prince William mask making. We figured, what do we need Kate for? All of us girls just want a piece of the handsome PILF.

2- William & Catherine colouring activity, like the good ol' colouring book days. Some of us stuck to the conservative nice colouring approach, while others made the couple into pop art and Austin Power-esque masterpieces.

3- Union Jack manicures. Loyalty to our lovely British friends is fierce.

4- Fancy hats and fancy shoes. Some tweeps made me laugh by tweeting: "Royal wedding day happened to coincide with Silly British hats day."

5- Royal wedding photo shoot. And by photo shoot, I mean bringing my DSLR over and taking ultimately ridiculous photos with teapots, flowers, the William mask, etc.

6- Royal wedding crossword puzzle. I was more interested in colouring the couple in! I did not complete this, will you?

7- Royal wedding sick bags. These are for William's dream ex-girlfriends, weak hearted, and those overwhelmed by the big fuss.

A tea party is obviously never complete with a crazy selection of teas, juices, pastries, biscuits, cakes, and sandwiches.

Maybe Prince Harry will see this marry me? Let's hope so.

Royal Wedding: Regal Distaste

Technically, I shouldn't be letting myself get sucked into all this Royal Wedding Malarchy. Irish and all that. There is plenty of Anti-Wedding antics happening this weekend as well, should I decide to get all indie-anarchist (this is very unlikely, I just think some of these things sound like fun).

Go to the Land Of Kings Festival in Dalston. No relation to the future King, this festival got there first. You can dance away your sorrows to losing Will until you get tinnitus.
The East End Film Festival will be on. Great short films and long films. I don't know if there will be popcorn though.
Try and sell an eyeball and go see Best Coast at Koko.
Party with Run Riot in Camden. One can drink AND get a hair cut. It could be the best slash worst decision of your life.
The Miro exhibition has started in the Tate. Smuggle in some Sangria and pretend you are away for the weekend in Spain.
~~Offer to go to work~~. Not so fun suggestion.
Get a massive pair of sunglasses. You won't be able to avoid all the bunting otherwise. Sunglasses from Lazy Oaf

Royal Wedding: Regal Embrace

There is no escaping the hype machine that is the royal wedding. You can either embrace it and get down with Catheriam (Catherine + William, like they did for Jedward) or take part in some anti-party antics. If I could, I would do both. There are some really great options. I'm giving the royal wedding in this post. Let's get regal.

Get your party bits at Maiden on Shoreditch High Street. They have a whole Royal Wedding section. There will be fancy royal cakes and fantastic prints. Picture from the Maiden blog.
Wake up early and stay in Shoreditch. Party like there is no hipster tomorrow at the Leonard Street Royal Wedding Party with The Book Club. Or go down the road to The Queen of Hoxton and lounge about with a priest on their roof at their Royal Wedding Crashers party.
Do some royal home-ware shopping at the Something Blue pop-up shop in Clerkenwell. It celebrates British Design and they have up-cycled furniture, so you can buy a chair and then take it to a street party.
Southbank is all dollied up and in love for the wedding and The Festival of Britain. One of my favourite places to faff.
Wear a fancy frock and have afternoon tea in Drink Shop Do, possibly the cutest place for tea in Kings Cross.
There is nothing more romantic than a Victoria and Albert late. It gets even more lovey dovey with their "I do" themed late night opening. I would go West for this.
Wear these to the party... Blue leather dress from Rokit, necklace from Tatty Devine (which you can apparently win if you get your picture taken at their Covent Garden store this weekend), shoes by KTZ.

IOU-nique

As a veggie, one of my main reasons for not eating meat is the fact I can't (economically) source good, happy meat. This is equally difficult in terms of clothing. With mass production and fast fashion everywhere, it is far more difficult to be unique, unless you are willing to wear a dress made of meat (organic, of course).
Wouldn't it be wonderful if you could source where your clothes came from, right down to the fabric?

The IOU Project is a group where they are aiming to source the clothing, right down to the fabric. Each item is in fact unique. They like the planet. This is something we should pay attention to.

Through the Queen's Roof

OMG, it's summer. (Sort of).
Queen of Hoxton in East London recently relaunched their rooftop escape with a super party. There were super drinks and super food (if you are veggie, like yours truly, they had barbequed halloumi). The rooftop terrace has a great view of the City and is a wonderful sun spot. Ample opportunity to get a bit tipsy and come up with hypothetical situations for the poor sods working across the road in a glasshouse office. Not that I would do that sort of thing.

Due to leaving ~~my memory card in my laptop~~ a technical error, I couldn't take any snaps, bar from a token phone picture.

So, instead, I will tell you how why it was such a fun night through the power of celebrities.

Rokit rock

Rokit reminds of being twelve and reading Bliss magazine, where there was always a thirteen year old girl wearing a tulle skirt from "Rokit vintage". My mind was blown. I wanted a tulle skirt so bad. I wanted to be one of those cool girls hanging out wearing vintage clothes in London. Rokit make dreams come true. They hosted a blogger party where you could play dress-up, eat cake and dance. It was a joy to hang out in their warehouse of wonder.

The lovely Imogen showed me and few other bloggers where their internet shopping magic happened. Rokit is not only about vintage; Rokit Designers Guild helps out new designers. A lot of the product in this is environmentally friend, including their in-house Rokit Recycled. Recycling clothing is something we need to do more of. At the party, I got my hair styled into Victory Rolls by Belinda who runs The Painted Lady in Shoreditch and who wrote Style Me Vintage. She makes it look so easy. The Vintage Patisserie provided jasmine tea and prosecco drinks and cakes. The soundtrack to the afternoon was provided by Munroe Bergdorf, Three Little Maids, Drag Your Heels and Echoes.

It was basically the best Sunday afternoon ever.

On a Missoni adventure

On the plane back from NY to Kuwait, I saw an ad in the in flight magazine. It was for 'Missoni Hotel, Kuwait'. I thought it was a February fools joke. Speech bubbles popping out of my head spoke 'Huh?'.

Only a few weeks later was the grand opening of Missoni Hotel, Kuwait. They also opened a branch in Dubai (but of course). This is really exciting for Kuwait, as it is lacking chic modern hotels. There's no hotel here that I would rave about to potential visitors, if they were to come to this sweat inducing country.

So, off we went to Missoni Hotel. I saw a few photos of the hotel before our visit, but in all honesty, the photos don't do the hotel justice. Nor do mine (some are taken from my blackberry).

These are photos from our first visit! I went along with FJ from FJ Bliss to try out their Italian restaurant Cuccina, and took a tour around the hotel.

The food was yum! I recommend the risotto. And I also wanted to steal their beautiful china and silverware.

Dress - Vintage

I took a photo with everything in the hotel. The colors were so vibrant, and the mixture of prints somehow worked together in the rooms and the whole hotel. Also, all the rooms overlook the beach. I want to live there.

And then came the magic mirror tv! How did I not know that such thing existed?

Striped pool with striped swimming pool chairs to go with it. I was never a matchy matchy kinda gal, but I like this.

And now here are the photos of our second visit, when we went to Choco cafe, the coffee shop in the hotel. All photos are borrowed from FJ bliss.

Somehow I feel like owning the tea set is a necessity.

Speaking of Missoni, I am surprised with my unusual pull towards Missoni's A/W 11/12 collection. I was never a huge fan of Missoni, but somehow this collection is not so 'classic' Missoni, and in a good way. The collection was filled with pastel prints, but some pieces added to the collection made it a little bit kooky. I love the chunky knits, and the pastel Jil Sander-esque trousers. The Lady Gaga/Elton John/Beatles round glasses put an evil darker spin to the outfits, especially when paired with the maxi length trench coats.

I want to find a vintage version of this coat. Help.

Oh fluffy ostrichy flappery maxi goodness.

Anyone who finds a maxi length trench, do let me know.

Weight a minute

Not so secret fact: I really wish I was part American. I say "y'all", I tend to be consistently chirpy, I measure things in "cups".

Thank you dear Rachel for this life saving piece of kitchen ware.

Measuring clothes in cups is not such a feasible option. I went to one of those pay by weight vintage places in Copenhagen (address and info will be added here asap) and tried to convert what I bought in to cups.

I also picked up this little white blouse. It makes me feel like a high school teen who likes her shirts see through.

Childish

I had a bad Friday. So I decided to dress up to amend my bad Friday feelings.
Mission accomplished. I figured the best way to cheer up was to wear things my 7 year old self would have been proud of. Clashing patterns and a sky blue skirt with shoes that were not exactly appropriate.

Floaty blouse (from River Island) as it has floral/bird print on it; Net curtain skirt (vintage) as I can remember hiding in curtains similar to this; leopard print bag (c/o Siren, it is the best), tights (from UO) they sparkle; shoes (H&M x Sonia Rykiel) which make me feel like a Spice Girl.

I wore this ensemble to the Birds Eye View Sounds & Silents, while hanging out with the gorgeous Katie from London Plinth. She also made me feel better. The evening was really great. Female composers made pieces of music to go with silent films. Pretty nifty.
Do you ever take inspiration from your childhood self? I do it a lot.

Wonderful Women

Ladies are really great. Like super great. Sometimes you think WOW, women do so much.

This weekend, there is a very exciting festival celebrating Women of the World, WOW festival in Southbank. There will be conferences, free music, concerts from the likes of Annie Lennox (style icon and women icon mashed into one) and more. It is the first time this festival is being organised, but it looks like something that is set to be a regular thing.

I am most excited about the Birds Eye View Sounds and Silents, which is screenings of silent films with new music made by talented folks like Micachu and Imogen Heap.

Something different to do with your weekend, instead of talking about how hungover you are, remember how great it is being a woman and celebrate it.

Granny goes to Hollywood

Tonight, in The Book Club, there is a new exhibition after starting, which is called "Bingo and Social Club". Basically, it is a photography exhibition by Michael Hess capturing scenes in Bingo Halls across the UK. All the images for the exhibition are taken from Michael's book and can be seen adorning the walls of The Book Club. The DJ tonight played classic crooner tunes and there were used bingo cards everywhere. If everyone wasn't dressed so slick, you could almost mistake it for a bingo hall.

In my head, Bingo chic is a very specific look. Sequins, smokey eyes, smoke rings and a glass of sherry.

Palladium Party

Vivienne Westwood is launching a couture line of Palladium jewellery in March (more on it here). It's pretty great. I think I need an oak leaf precious metal crown in my life. I went to the launch party last week in the swish Wallace Collection (thank you Lara from Slam) and had a blast.

Highlights: Telling Roisin Murphy I loved her and Dame Westwood making eye contact with me.

Transitional

This evening, I intended to go to the Clarks Originals Guerilla gig where one of my current favourite bands Summer Camp were playing, head home and eat some tofu. This required minimal effort dress-wise. Gig chic is something I am well practised at.

However, my phone rang at about three o'clock today. My cousin offered me a ticket to the production of Wagner's Parsifal by the English National Opera. Cue a fumble on the phone and a moment of hesitation until I squeaked "eh YEAH". One could not miss an opera-tunity like this. Opera chic does mean dressing less like a Shoreditch-twat and more like a West End Woman. I am not so practised at that. I felt like I needed one of those magazine guides of "How to transform this transitional piece from your breakfast meeting outfit to your quick sexy lunch date and quick fumble in the bathroom outfit in one move".

I think managed to succeed my outfit challenge in the end though.
Summer Camp were amazing. (Girl fan, me? Non!). Thank you Clarks Originals, Strummerville and Clash Magazine for that.

Wagner was amazing. The Colosseum for the ENO is just breathtaking. Thank you Julie's friend for cancelling on such short notice.

A last minute decision was made not to wear my leather shorts. Leather shorts do not show respect to Wagner.

Last week, I hung out with some hot bloggettes in Soho Hotel with thanks to Most Wanted Voucher Codes. Voucher codes can help you save money on the high street. They also let bloggers loose in photo booths. (I will be uploading to our Facebook a lot of pictures of girls on film).

After a lot of cake eating, we all piled ourselves onto very comfortable chairs in Soho Hotel's screening room to watch Marie Antoinette. It is such a beautifully shot film, making me lust after macaroons and a towering French bouffant. Due to my lame curfew, I left before the end of the film and never saw what happened.

Clarks Original Idea

So, I have this association of Clarks with school shoes, those shoes with the key hidden in the sole. Anyone else remember them?
Now that I am all grow'd up ~~and no longer deem it necessary to keep keys in my shoe~~, Clarks Originals are a bit more me. They are a bit cool and original nowadays. Lots of desert boots, (essential in any self-respecting hipster's wardrobe). To celebrate their new Spring Summer collection, Clarks Originals have launched a pop-up store, on 101 Regent Street in Central London. The best thing about the campaign is the fact that there will be guerilla gigs, as part of a collaboration with Strummerville bands. Shoes and tunes; my idea of a dream shop.

My absolute favourite thing in the shop were the Laura Ashley Desert Boots. Serious shoe sole-mates.

The pop-up shop is going to be going on until the 20th of February. See you at the guerilla gigs?

Amelia's book

Amelia's Compendium of Fashion Illustration is one of the most beautiful books I have ever seen. It is my new bedtime reading.

The book features lots of talented illustrators who use their illustrating skills to showcase ethical designers. I don't often buy fashion books, but I made an exception for this one. It is colourful (points for colour) and all the interviews seem really personal. It is in no way pretentious, like a lot of fashion books can be. If you have any interest in ethical fashion, this is an amazing reference of designers and can give you an insight into their design process. It fits in with my own personal reasons to blog, to try and support young, world-friendly, independent talent.

Speaking of young, world-friendly, independent talent, my dear dear friend Jasmine sent me an illustration of me in my Goodone dress. It was one of the greatest things to find in my inbox.

You guys, I'm really sorry. You know I have a blog right? Unfortunately this means I'm basically a pox. Hard to believe, but I will make you ill. If Franca Sozzani says so, it must be true.
This whole Franca Sozzani epidemic (boy did I turn the tables on her, I called her an epidemic) has reminded me why the ~~fashion~~ world can be pretty ridiculous. Lady, relax, I don't want to give you the flu, I've had the vaccine. Embrace the internet in a big bandwidth embrace. Get a grip, there are far worse epidemics to deal with around the world. Mostly, her rant made me laugh though.

On a side note, I had no idea who this Franca lady was until I read about how I'm a plague of locusts. Gee whizz, I am a bad-ass "Fashion blogger pox".

However, if you were to say "I like your dress Fiona, Goodone", I would assume you were referring to my new jumper dress.

I have been a fan of Goodone, since spotting them a few seasons ago at Fashion Week. I like them as they are great advocates for sustainable fashion and make nice jumpers. This is a win/win situation which you can wear.

Another great advocate for sustainable fashion is the wonderwoman Amelia Gregory of Amelia's Magazine. I found my new jumper at the Ethical Pop-up shop as part of the Amelia's Compendium of Fashion Illustration (#ACOFI) launch celebrations in 123 Bethnal Green. Fun times in the ethical fun factory. I can't wait to wear my Goodone jumper while reading the #ACOFI book (more on that to come).

Oh, the girlish blogger cliche of loving cupcakes.

The Hummingbird Bakery on Old Brompton Road has reopened recently, with far more space to inhale delicious cakes. My initial impression of the Old Brompton Road branch of the Hummingbird is of waiting outside in the rain to go inside to order. All is changed now, with a larger display section and a sleek cupcake bar, allowing you to have a less poky cupcake experience. I went to the reopening bash with my friend Louise, an East London Craft Guerilla and partook in ~~some~~ a lot of cake eating.

Highlight of the evening: Tasting the cocktail cupcakes. I highly recommend the Strawberry Daiquiri and Mojito flavour for some sort of special event you need cake for.

Lowlight of the evening: The post-frosting comedown while on the tube home.

Instant Hip

Last Sunday, I attempted to go to the Hipstamatic exhibition in the Orange Dot Gallery with my friend Damien. We never made it there, as it was shut. I'm looking forward to checking it out soon though.
The great thing about hipstamatic photos is that you can take pictures of ridiculously mundane things like a rock and make them look really cool. It makes you seem like a really great photographer, when all you did was click a button on your phone. One person I know mistook all these hipster hipstamatics as real photos and couldn't understand why her pictures weren't as good. Then she discovered it was an app.
I started playing around with some hipstamatic tutorials online to try make myself look a bit cooler.

Swedish H&M Hasbeens

I don't normally do this (rehash collaboration news). You already know about it, you probably have read about it somewhere else. It has been tweeted about all day. I am making an exception to my rule; because I love clogs.

H&M are making a Swedish shoe love-fest with Swedish Hasbeens. I had been looking at my own clogs the other day thinking when they can bang around Shoreditch again. Now I can have a slick black pair. Imagine the imaginary scenarios I can imagine myself in with those clogs! My only concern is how much H&M will stick to the Swedish companies idea of sustainability. It would be great if they stuck with the earth-friendly ideas, fingers crossed it happens.

How great is this video? Apparently, there is some sort of ipad app you can download, which lets you alter the kaleidoscope effects on the video. The Suzan are definitely one of my new band crushes for 2011.

The video made me think of Mary Katrantzou, who makes kaleidoscope digital prints on structurally interesting dresses. This song would be a great background tune to some of her S/S2011 collection. It would be very cool to alter the kaleidoscope effect on your dress, like the video app.

Woah, it's 2011. I'm still the same person?! Oh.
Here are my practical resolutions, these are things I shall endeavour do on a regular basis.

Have more pun! (This one has already been put into practice, I just sent a friend the following text "Bear with me, we shall paws for a moment".)
Dance more. I dance quite a lot, but I figure there is no harm in doing more.
Cut sugar from my coffee. I'm sweet enough.
Make more things. Be it paper chains, friends, cups of tea.
Tell you guys about how I joined The Note Well. Speaking of it, we have an event next week in East London, please come.
Wear less impractical things. For example, why the hell am I wearing a lace shirt on the 2nd of January. Shirt on sale, necklace with lots of love from Maggie Angus, skirt from Awear a while back

I think I can do this. If you catch me wearing a bikini in February, while grasping a mochafrappachappchino and salty crisps. you can say I have failed.

I did something out of character this Christmas. I bought something in a pre-Christmas sale. It was needed, something I can wear with a million different things. It has swish factor.

Precious Metal

I recently discovered a new kind of metal recently, palladium. As a full-time science lover, I felt the urge to discover more about this element.
According to here, palladium is classified as a noun.
S: (n) palladium, Pd, atomic number 46 (a silver-white metallic element of the platinum group that resembles platinum; occurs in some copper and nickel ores; does not tarnish at ordinary temperatures and is used (alloyed with gold) in jewelry)
Central Saint Martins and The Palladium Alliance are joining forces to get young talent using this precious metal for their pieces in a competition. Five designers have already been shortlisted and their work will be on show in March 2011. It is a great platform, as the designers can have free reign over what they make and how they use the palladium. Plus Giles Deacon is a judge. Can't be a bad thing having such an innovative designer looking at your work!

We love supporting new talent here. Not only do we love fresh ideas, I love the idea of making a new precious metal more precious.

Around my word

A few weeks back, I was emailed by a Frenchie called Damien to take part in his incredible project. All I needed to do was pick a word.

My new friend is new(ish) to London town and in his quest to improve his English is asking people to help him out. This led to him starting to make a mosaic of these words. You teach Damien a new word and he documents it as part of his mosaic. The project is called Around Your Word. Not only does it lead to new friendships, it is a way of finding out more about London and increasing your vocabulary I love the idea that words, the things that make stories, now have a story. The project is ever-evolving, with each word having a person behind it, a new story, a new piece of vocab for Damien.

Love Vintage London this Sunday

Anyone else having major Christmas present dilemmas? I am. Dear older brother, if you read this, do you know how difficult you are to shop for? VERY. Finding personal, good value and interesting Christmas presents for people is very important to me. I have spend the past two Sundays trawling through Sunday Up Market in Brick Lane and the Tate gift shop in the hope of finding something my rather intelligent brother will approve of.
This Sunday, you will find me at the Love Vintage London: An Old Style Christmas, for some Christmas market shopping/party/all-round-fun-times. The market is going to be held in one of my favourite watering holes, the Queen of Hoxton in Shoreditch. It costs 6 quid to attend, bearing in mind it is an all-day market/party and it is raising money for St. Mungos, ensuring homeless people in London will have a hot meal (shopping AND doing good, clearly a win situation). Not only can you browse a rooftop vintage market, you can also drink mulled wine, oogle hot shoreditch-twat types and take part in some Christmas-aoke. It starts at 1pm, so ample time to sleep in from Saturday night. Plus, you can get some r&r by having a retro makeover and watching cabaret. (Is it strange I find cabaret relaxing?)

It sounds far more entertaining than going to an overcrowded Hyde park and paying six million pounds for a mulled wine.

It is going to be a fantastic (and festive) way to spend a cold Sunday and it is a do-gooder way of having fun. Dear older brother, if I don't find you something there, expect something from the duty-free in Stanstead airport.

Anyone else going? Also, do you have any other pre-Christmas suggestions for off-the-beaten-track presents?

Blooming winter

Word of warning: You should not try and part me from my floral prints, there would be kicking and screaming if you tried to remove it from my wardrobe.

However, it is getting cold, there is snow. I can't kid myself that it is OK to wear a floral tea-dress where the hemline does little to reduce the risk of me getting a cold in my kidneys.

Enter my new dress...

There are a number of reasons why I like this dress.

It is helping with my smooth, albeit a few months late, transition from summer hussy to being more appropriately dressed for the cold (ie having a longer hemline), thus reducing my chance of having a cold in my kidneys.
It is a more "winter"-appropriate floral print. Although, floral print is always appropriate.
The shape is quite lovely. I was a bit apprehensive about the gathered detail but it fits rather well.
It matches the carpet in my house.
Did I mention I like floral prints?

There are a number of reasons why this dress may not be that great

Due to it's clingy nature and length, it has that tight at the calves thing going on. This means reduced speed while running for a bus. While wearing it, I missed my bus.

There are no other reasons to dislike this dress. Plus, I looked great for my friend, so no matter if I was fifteen minutes late.

The lovely folks Almina and Emma from Rare kindly offered for me to try out some of their new Paprika range. Paprika is a new younger range from Rare and considering my eternal quest for youth, it suits me just fine. Thank you!

Free manicure and mp3

I just got home from the best treat I've ever received from Topshop. I received an email from Refinery29 this morning announcing free WAH manicures at Topshop SoHo for 3 days! Obviously, I got dressed really quick and headed over there in the afternoon. Oh, the joy of not having a job.

I signed my name for the next available appointment at 4pm. I had 3 hours to spare, which meant browsing in Urban Outfitters, Sephora, H&M, cardamom coffee from The Hampton Chutney Co. and a danish from Dean & Decluca.

I opted for a nude/red/white tartan manicure. Here are the results! Thank you lovely ladies at WAH.

Right now, I'm sitting on my couch admiring my free manicure and listening to Virgin Forest. The band consists of my boys: Scott Stapleton, Jeff Bailey, Chris Marine and Jesse Ainslie (4 pout of the 5 members of Phosphorescent). They recently launched their new LP titled 'Joy Atrophy' (Check out the cover that's photographed by me!), which just got reviewed by The Fader with a free mp3 'That's alright' available for download. I'm not going to do a review here, all I'm going to say is that they're lovely, and I'd recommend them for a listen.

I've been hunting for a wool warm turban for this cold autumn NY weather. I found a few turbans here and there in vintage stores around williamsburg, but most of them were made out of spandex. They gave the 60's swimming cap effect, rather than 'this is my cozy turban beanie' effect.

Of course, I found the perfect one on ASOS. But when I finally came to order it, it was sold out. A scenario that is very common with things I really really want to buy from ASOS.

Story short: It came back in stock. And now I finally have it.

Excuse the powerbrows, but I tend to play around with makeup when I'm extremely bored. The rainy weather doesn't help with the boredom either.

Dead Creepers

I am slowly coming around to the idea of creeper shoes. I think I could ease myself into wearing them by getting these Red or Dead suede and leopard print Susie creeps.

Seriously contemplating them. I could channel my inner creep while wearing them and do this dance my friends and I did at university, which had a soundtrack that sounded something like "hasathecreephasathecreep" on repeat.

Oh how I adore Red or Dead shoes. I like that these ones are a less creepy creeper (if that makes sense) to the ones with the platforms and all the plaid. They could definitely be worn with my very leather shorts and some sort of tshirt tucked in, with a large amount of eyeliner.

Another Coco

There must be some sort of lucky aura around people called "Coco". Obviously the Coco Chanel name thing came along after a while, but she still did pretty well for herself from it. Then there is Coco Sumner, I blame Coco, Coco Pops.

So Coco Fennell should be no exception.

Daughter of a jewellery designer and Shoreditch dweller, this young designer is someone to keep tabs on. It's clear from her lovely pieces in her online shop that she is of the East London fashpack; lots of redbrick walls, girlish dress paired with slightly bohemian accessories. It isn't exactly ground breaking designs, but they work. Girls like me will never tire of a floral print dress with a skater skirt or a velvet dress. They are wearable, but the simply styling and no frills photography makes them for me.

My favourite pieces definitely are the black cut-out maxi and gold shoulder spikes. Too much to pair them together?
